00:09.38yassineis there a way to set global/application wide  properties for jsp project ?

00:51.35jbalinthey
00:52.04yassinenow i understand what you mean with your question about the " ! "
00:52.20yassineits used for declaration right
00:52.46yassine<%! declaration %>
00:52.50jbalintYes, it's not processed during the request but when the page is created.
00:52.55yassine<% call  declaration %>
00:53.13jbalintEh, kind of, that's just scriptlet, so it happens during the request.
00:53.54yassinemhh what im trying to do is to set a kind of global / application wides variables that i could access from each jsp file
00:54.25yassinelike the one i normally creates in the web.xml and access in my init()
00:54.40jbalint"each" jsp file?
00:54.51yassinein the application
00:54.56jbalintWhy do you need filesystem paths in every single JSP file?
00:55.38yassineim i neeed to merge some xml xsl file and my xml file and xsl are spreded in differnt diretories
00:56.12yassineso each time i want to merg xml and it xsl  i need to point to them /ther paths
00:57.17jbalintyou cant do this with one servlet or something?
00:58.35yassinei can but that mean more work since i took over this project from someone who spent adosen of hours on it
00:58.54yassineso i wanted to use what already done
01:00.22yassinebut i think right now seriously about that
01:00.47yassineno comments nothing so its a bit hard to find a start here
01:01.04*** join/#tomcat golqm-noob (i=poisoner@11383.unitednetworx.com)
01:02.06jbalintYes, that's a bad place to be.
01:05.15yassinejbalint,  servlets are not faster than jsp right since jsp are converted to servlets before getting compiled so maybe jsp's are a bit slower at the first call since they get generated but after that its all same or is my understanding wrong ?
01:05.58jbalintYeah, but it's probably easier for a number of other reasons to hjust use one servlet instead of modifying every single JSP page.
01:06.54yassinei think i will move to servlets since i feel more confortable with them than this chinese here :)
01:07.05UvizHow do you precompile a jsp page so the first call would be fast as well?
01:07.08Uvizyassine, Haha.
01:07.14yassine:)
01:07.25yassineheya Uviz
01:07.42UvizI found $20k but that's beside the point.
01:08.05yassineUviz, i was just wondering if on of them is faster Servlets vs jsp but i dont think so
01:08.50UvizCompiled jsp is same as the servlet. I think you can view the source in your tomcat directory somewhere.
01:08.51UvizHold on.
01:09.09yassinei know Uviz

01:10.26yassinehow do you say comparaison  ?
01:10.32UvizComparison.
01:10.35yassineis that right
01:10.37yassineokay

08:07.39lykenwhy are you still awake?
08:14.13jasonbWell, writing.
08:15.04jasonbI *try* to get some things finished and off to the editor by the end of each weekend, although I usually fail to actually do it.
08:15.54lykenhehe, well ill be the voice in your head to get something happening
08:15.54lykenhehe
08:16.31jasonbI'm writing, and working on it a lot, but it's so huge that I think I'm nearly finished with a chapter and then it takes me an additional 4 weeks..
08:16.58jasonbThat's consistenly happening just as it did when we wrote the first edition.
08:17.51lykenheh
08:18.52jasonbI'm still encouraged by lots of reviews I read by the readers of the first edition saying how much they appreciated the verbose text about why something was good or why it wasn't good.  They were pretty pleased to finally get some good english explanations for things that were perplexing.
08:19.30lykenyer
08:19.38lykenalso..
08:19.46lykenneed to put in a postgres section if its not already there :)
08:20.44jasonbI also often caught myself telling people "well, I did explain this in the book.." and then when I went back and looked at the section where I thought I wrote it, it wasn't there.  It turned out that I only thought I wrote it in there, and I really didn't for lack of time, so the reader didn't get sufficient warning about certain things..  This time I'm filling a bunch of that in.
08:21.13lykencools
08:21.27jasonbIt's just time consuming.. all of it, really.
08:22.41jasonbI'd love to put in some detailed text about each popular database people could use with Tomcat.. yes, even including MySQL.  :)  But, again, there just isn't time.
08:23.05*** join/#tomcat yassine (n=yassine@xdsl-84-44-176-111.netcologne.de)

19:00.36rhizmoefrom within tomcat?
19:01.09rhizmoei'm not a developer, but i think it'd be a <servlet-mapping> in web.xml
19:01.43rhizmoein apache/mod_jk you'd do a JkMount /* <thingy>
19:06.22Darwinis it a good idea to put a index.jsp into the directory which contains something like <jsp:forward page="http://server/servlet/startApp " /> ? I'd like to have a solution which is supported by all browsers
19:09.10rhizmoei don't know
19:26.14yassineDarwin, hresp.setRedirect()
19:26.31yassineor somthing like that works for me
19:27.22Darwinam now using something like that
19:27.25Darwin<% response.sendRedirect("http://server/servlet/startMain"); %>

21:31.50longbeachi have a problem with apache i think. I have some links who point to an URL like this : http://blabla:81/joe. Sometimes the links omit the port number. http://blabla/joe, resulting in an invalid URL. I do not know if the problem is in the Apache configuration but you have any idea/ suggestion that could help, i would like to hear it :)
