01:15.06Sho_'desktop windows getting stacked under the desktop window' wat
01:15.23JarcodeSho_: as in, desktop window types (under the EWMH spec)
01:16.35JarcodeSho_: setting _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE to _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DESKTOP does strange things on kwin, although KDE widgets are able to be placed accordingly.
01:17.22Jarcodeie. focusing the desktop window (root window, I assume, unless kwin uses a separate window for the desktop) or switching workspaces just causes desktop windows to be hidden
01:17.53Jarcodeit's a bit of a niche case and was hoping a KDE developer could shed some light on the issue considering most other WMs respect this properly.
01:19.49Jarcodesighs
01:20.00JarcodeI guess I'll go find a mailing list or something to ask in
01:20.06jankusanagi_you should probably try in #kde-devel
01:20.12jankusanagi_if you're looking for _developers_
01:20.23jankusanagi_plus, probably not the best time of the day
01:20.32Sho_I do know we handle _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DESKTOP special in the stacking order, but I can't really remember the details off the cuff
01:20.39Jarcodeyeah I'm just going to use the mailing list.
01:20.48Sho_note that widgets aren't in seperate windows though
01:21.05JarcodeSho_: the problem is that for some strange reason, KDE includes the desktop wallpaper itself in the stacking list of desktop windows
01:21.23jankusanagi_Plasma
01:21.28jankusanagi_that's optional btw

01:25.08Sho_that's because the desktop wallpaper is a _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DESKTOP window with _NET_WM_STATE_BELOW
01:25.31JarcodeSho_: the _NET_WM_STATE_BELOW and _NET_WM_STATE_ABOVE atoms do nothing on kwin
01:25.47JarcodeSho_: also, why can't the wallpaper just be drawn on the root window?
01:26.00Jarcode(like every other WM, except for mutter, because gnome devs are special)
01:28.13JarcodeSho_: oh, I should say, those atoms do nothing for _desktop_ windows.
01:28.35Jarcodepretty sure they work fine for other window types otherwise a lot more people would be complaining
01:28.46jankusanagi_again, the desktop being included in the list of windows is _optional_
01:29.05Jarcodejankusanagi_: oh, that's what you meant by being optional?
01:29.23Jarcodejankusanagi_: ... uh, how would I go about telling my users to disable that?
01:29.38jankusanagi_task switcher setting in Plasma's System Settings
01:30.06jankusanagi_or right-clicking any title bar → more actions → window manager settings
01:30.40Sho_jankusanagi_: Jarcode  is talking about something more low-level, nothing to do with Alt+Tab
01:31.02jankusanagi_well, he didn't say what the actual problem was, so just guessing here...
01:31.02Jarcodejankusanagi_: yeah I think you are mistaken here
01:31.14Jarcodejankusanagi_: I did make it quite clear, what do you not understand?
01:31.21jankusanagi_nevermind...
01:32.19Jarcodethere's EWMH atoms for skipping pagers and taskbars that seem to work fine for getting KDE to ignore my window

01:33.07Jarcodedesktop windows*
01:33.34JarcodeI will just send something to the mailing list later today
01:34.27JarcodeI'm fairly sure this is also a bug too, desktop windows don't seem to be blatantly unsupported either so this looks like a half-assed implementation that was never tested since KDE widgets are usually used instead here

01:47.18Sho_as for why the wallpaper isn't just drawn into the root window, one reason is that effects like the desktop grid are a lot easier if you have seperate client windows for each desktop within the screen if the wallpaper drawing isn't done in the window manager. it means the scene/compositor code can be generic. if you draw to the root window directly (which is the size of the screen), you can't do that

02:52.00JarcodeSho_: alright, but that doesn't explain why other desktop features get misplaced during the routines that arrange the desktop windows
02:52.34JarcodeSho_: which is why I guessed it's a bug (or consequence) from the way desktop windows are handled in KDE
02:53.03Jarcode(perhaps support for desktop windows were added before desktop background were separated from the root window)

03:00.23Sho_Jarcode: I could well be a bug. I had a quick look at the code earlier, and basically there's binning windows into layers and generic stacking code within each layer. The desktop layer is at the bottom, but above/below are implemented via layers (DesktopLayer > BelowLayer > NormalLayer > AboveLayer, modulo some other unrelated ones) which is why above/below don't work relative between multiple desktop windows

03:02.04Sho_I'm assuming you're trying to put a desktop window above Plasma's, and I don't think the code cares to make this work well currently, perhaps also due to regressions during heavy refactoring for Wayland
03:03.04Sho_I'd suggest a bug report with a good explanation and a testcase

21:57.37JanKusanagiah, I think that's gone because it's autodetected
21:57.53JanKusanagiwhen you add a global menu widget somewhere
21:59.30dumbl3d0reOkey
21:59.53JanKusanagi(or add the global menu button to the window decoration buttons)
