03:00.47vasuviIf you don't mind having to update it manually, just follow the distro-independent instructions at http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started
03:01.42vasuviStart with getting the source via anonymous SVN, then work on the steps under "Building KDE"
03:02.34vasuviAlso, I'd recommend removing any current Qt and KDE installation first, though I'm not sure if that's required.

03:12.35vasuviJust a warning; it's pretty complicated; don't bother doing it unless you have lots of time and patience
03:13.14vasuviIf you just want to run KDE 4.4 on a Debian-based distro, I'd recommend running Kubuntu 9.10 with the KDE 4.4 PPA
03:13.46vasuviNot that I'm a big Ubuntu fan or anything; I actually prefer vanilla Debian, but based on what you want, it's probably the best way

03:29.35*** join/#kde dolio (~quassel@nr22-66-161-253-48.fuse.net)
03:30.11vasuviThey spread it very well; most popular non-enterprise distros have KDE 4.4 in either their official repositories, in a separate (but well-maintained) repository, or at the very least their development repository already; Debian is one of the very few exceptions
03:30.42*** join/#kde rushfan (~rushfan@cpe-98-155-86-34.san.res.rr.com)
03:30.46vasuviIt makes it harder for *developers* to be sure, but KDE seems to have a good number of developers despite how hard it is to build
03:31.11vasuviNot to mention, Gentoo makes it dead-simple to have a svn build of KDE; if I were a developer, that's what I would use
03:33.31hatoonyou managed to compile kde?
03:36.38vasuviI did it once by hand; I'll probably never do that again (simply not worth it).  Then I did it using the KDE overlay in Gentoo, and it was much, much easier.
03:38.04vasuvidirects hatoon to #gentoo-kde if he's serious about actually compiling KDE, rather than using a distribution's pre-build packages
03:38.34vasuviOf course, then you'll have to learn how to use Gentoo also, but it's a piece of cake compared to compiling KDE raw

20:18.10thiagokde4-config --localprefix
20:18.12evmarthiago: that would be nice, but in the interim people are blaming us for the bugs :)
20:18.40thiagoyou can also just run kreadconfig to get the proxy settings
20:19.02thiagoinstead of going into the $KDEHOME and searching for the files, parsing them, etc.
20:19.12evmarit looks like we use inotify so we get updated whenever the settings change (i'm not too familiar with this code)

20:20.54evmarthis code seems rather complicated.  i do think shelling out to a helper would be nice.
20:21.50thiagothinks
20:22.06thiagothere may be a D-Bus signal emitted when those settings change
