17:18.20Sho_DaSkreech: Fedora used to be separated into two package trees, Core and Extras, with Core being maintained mostly by Red Hat personnell and Extras being the "community distro". Gnome used to be in Core, while KDE was left for Extras. With Fedora 7 they've finally merged Core and Extras (and thus dropped "Core" from the distro name), and there's an official KDE spin / Live CD install of Fedora now.

17:23.25Sho_DaSkreech: What's exciting about this resurgence of KDE support in Fedora is that Red Hat's commercial product, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, is based on a Fedora snapshot every couple of years, so KDE should become a bigger part of RH's business again, too, hopefully. According to Rex' Akademy talk already about half of existing RHEL customers use KDE despite it being somewhat inconvenient to install (so it's a conscious choice for them), and that would only get better if
17:23.25Sho_RHEL were to have strong KDE I guess.

17:28.52DaSkreechWhile RH was to cherry pick what they wanted/looked good and slow it down harden it and beatonit to make it enterprise eady
17:29.13Sho_DaSkreech: As Rex portrayed it in his Akademy talk RHEL is basically rebased to the current state of Fedora at the beginning of a new RHEL cycle, and then goes through the hardening process that turns it into a RHEL release
