16:08.13*** join/#gsoc mkuettler (~quassel@f053085143.adsl.alicedsl.de)
16:09.25deathraider1620I plan to participate in GSoC 2013 and want to know what projects i can undertake on python, c & c++
16:10.58summatusmentisas far as I'm aware, there's no guarantee GSoC 2013 will occur
16:11.28summatusmentisthat said, you might look at what projects occurred last year and used those languages, and start working with them
16:12.57JordiGHI always find it a little backwards that people first think about what languages they can write in and then look for projects that use those languages.
16:13.36JordiGHI guess I'm just used to going the other way, finding a project I care about and then using or learning just about any language that project is using.
16:13.52*** join/#gsoc ajedwards (~axemurder@AAnnecy-651-1-56-131.w86-209.abo.wanadoo.fr)
16:14.38nathanielmanistaThink about a problem that you want to solve. Then endure the language you must use to most expediently and robustly solve it. :-P
16:14.58JordiGHnathanielmanista: Yeah, like that.
16:15.51JordiGHI mean, say you know C++. C++ is such a complicated language and there are so many widely differing styles for C++, that it's almost like learning the language all over again each time you look at a different project.
16:16.55JordiGHSimilar things apply to most other language. Some languages that attempt to enforce a style like Python have a little bit less of this, but the style can also be as complicated as the language it's written in
16:17.17deathraider1620JordiGH i agree but some org's like python require you to submit a small patch to the project you are going to work on
16:17.57deathraider1620so it is better to see which language i know and then choose the project
16:18.54JordiGHIs it really that difficult to learn a new language? I bet you'll have to learn new things about Python to submit a patch to Python itself.
16:19.11*** join/#gsoc ajs (~Aaron_Sch@x-134-84-227-235.uofm-secure.wireless.umn.edu)
16:19.25deathraider1620yeah i do agree.

16:19.56JordiGHI suppose some languages are difficult if they are very different from the ones you already know. I just usually learn languages myself by first finding a project that is using that language.
16:21.14deathraider1620yes,  that is a good practice to choose a project and then start learning its language starting from small pieces and going to higher level
16:21.55JordiGHAn essential skill that I don't think is frequently taught in schools is to read other people's code.
16:22.32JordiGHBut then again, hell is other people's code: http://7.asset.soup.io/asset/2893/2775_c889.png
16:24.05deathraider1620yeah i know that reading other people's code is helpful and it is considered "cheating" in schoolsbut when i'm talking about gsoc i have to complete the project within almost 2 months
16:24.42*** join/#gsoc Gentlecat_ (~Roman@79.105.214.132)
16:25.02deathraider1620so i surely need to possess some pre-requisites for the project.
16:25.20JordiGHI had a student who had never programmed in C or C++ but he submitted good C++ code during GSoC 2012.
16:25.56JordiGHSo it appears that sometimes you can learn a language during GSoC, or enough to get the job done, which is all that matters in the end.
16:26.13deathraider1620and being an electronics student sometimes i can't spend whole day learning another language
16:26.29JordiGHWe picked him because he was good at math and showed a lot of diligence. We helped him learn C++.
16:26.52deathraider1620yeah it is true. thanks for the advice
16:26.58*** join/#gsoc dwcramer (~dcramer@50.56.228.48)
16:27.32JordiGHDoes the electromagnetic radiation emitted from the devices you are surrounded by as a student hinder your ability to learn new languages?
16:28.28JordiGHSorry, stupid joke.
16:28.44deathraider1620its alright
16:29.14deathraider1620so it means i may apply to a project even if i don't know the languages but i show that i am willing to learn them during gsoc
16:30.08JordiGHPerhaps.
16:30.45JordiGHIf you think the project is interesting, you can learn the language easily, and you are willing to do the work, I say, don't restrict yourself by languages.
16:31.02deathraider1620thanks, i will keep it mind while choosing my project.
