04:41.31LostSoulI know issuse is not Debian related but seems that guys from suse can't help me. I had strange issuse yesterday, I tried to dd bootable pendrive to restora partition table and use it again as 8GB pendrive
04:41.54LostSoulI did dd and after that tried fdisk and gparted
04:41.56LostSoulhttps://paste.debian.net/hidden/092f5bfd/
04:43.06LostSoulI was not able to create table or rather linux didn't see it. What was funnier that dd if=/dev/zero of=/my/dev made device "smaller" like when I set count or bs or both pendrive in fdisk was seen as for example 5kb
04:43.36LostSoulToday I put it in other laptop and there indeed was no partition on pendrive, I used fdisk and it's created
04:43.48LostSoulBut my question is .. what could have gone wrong?

04:50.56LostSoulI've met such issue for the first time

04:51.41LostSoulI was alway using dd with if + of + bs=1 count=2048 or something similar but it never made my "disk" smaller
04:52.20shrinespartprobe will tell linux to reload the partition table on a device into memory; after running it you can be sure that when you run a `fdisk -l` it should be what is actually on the device
04:52.43shrineskpartx can be used to tell linux to create /dev/sdbX partition device files in the case that they arnt automatically created

20:36.00sumiquick question. i've been looking this whole day to figure how to get logs working for a certain app. i'm using a debian:jessie docker container. how can i check which log system is used? i can't find the configuration files. what log system does jessie use?
20:38.28jmcnaughtsumi: by default jessie uses journald which forwards to rsyslog for persistent storage, but everything's usually different in docker (where typically you have a single process running, no init, no other daemons like syslogs)
20:38.47sumithanks
20:39.10sumiso what does /dev/log do ?
20:39.14sumiit's a socket?

20:41.35jmcnaughtsumi: on my system /dev/log is a symlink to /run/systemd/journal/dev-log which is a socket. on a sysvinit system, it would be a socket to rsyslog. but again, with docker you typically don't have other daemons running in your container. from what i recall, the docker host listens to output from the container and logs that on the host system (not in the container)

20:42.32jmcnaughtyou'll need to refer to the docker documentation, and also check the details of how your container was built (the debian docker containers aren't really official, and are significantly different from stock debian)
20:42.55sumijmcnaught yes indeed, in my containers i would redirect stdout and stderr to /proc/1/fd/1 so it appears on the host running the container
20:43.26random_numbersI have yet more questions about the Debian security chain. I found that '/var/lib/apt/lists/http.debian.net_debian_dists_jessie-updates_InRelease' contains the checksums for say 'contrib/binary-amd64/Packages.xz'... but I'm not sure where to go from here.

20:44.26sumibut from what you told me, there is a high probability that the log system used on my base debian container is not "stock" debian
20:44.55sumii'll try to install rsyslog then and configure it to dispatch to /proc/1/fd/1.

20:46.22jmcnaughtsumi: haproxy has no way to tell it to log elsewhere? i only played with docker a little but it doesn't seem designed to have daemons running inside the container.. it's meant for single process containers
20:47.54jmcnaughtrandom_numbers: apt downloads a package from the repository, verifies the checksum of the downloaded .deb against its cached Packages file, verifies the checksum of that Packages file matches what's in the Release file, then verifies that the release file is signed by a key in apt's keyring
20:47.59sumii've just tried to use systemd-cat and the os tells me it failed to create stream fd
20:48.28random_numbersjmcnaught: Where is the 'Packages' index stored, and its checksum?

20:50.02jmcnaughtsumi: if you want a less crazy pants, more traditional system running inside your containers you could use LXC instead of Docker
20:50.15sumiLXC?
20:50.18sumii'll have a look
20:50.43jmcnaughtLXC is system containers.. it boots an init like a normal system, runs supporting daemons in the background
20:51.11sumihaproxy logging on docker containers seems like a hot topic on google. people really struggle and haproxy dev say it dispatches to syslog
20:51.12jmcnaughton the other hand Docker is a radical replacement of the init model (way more radical than systemd) where each service runs as a single-process container

23:07.59kevrdoes upstart come with /usr/sbin/service?
23:09.00jmcnaughtkevr: you can review contents of installed packages with "dpkg -L $package" or search for which package a file belongs to with "dpkg -S /path/to/file"

23:11.29kevri think it had to do with docker-engine
23:12.27jmcnaughtit would be hilarious if the upstream docker repos enforce some sort of anti-systemd FUD on its users considering that Docker is a far more radical departure from traditional init than systemd is

23:13.48kevrthen running an upgrade/dist-upgrade
23:14.14jmcnaughtkevr: that kind of thing is not guaranteed to work, but i'm glad you managed to do it
23:14.33kevrgotcha
23:14.47jmcnaughtkevr: in general you cannot mix the repos of Debian releases. If you add stretch repo to a jessie system, you get a stretch system (or a half broken hybrid of the two)
23:15.44kevri see. and darn, something is wrong with docker. :/
