01:41.32aeryndunhamgood morning
01:45.16resplingood morning
01:49.58aeryndunhamHow are you?
01:50.56resplinNeck deep in salesforce cases. <sigh>
01:51.05resplinWhat part of the world are you based in?
01:51.25resplinThe channel is usually pretty quiet this time of day.
01:51.34resplinWell, it's pretty quiet every time of every day. <grin>
01:52.31aeryndunhamI've popped in a couple times, and always silent
01:52.42aeryndunhamI'm American, but I work on a cruise ship, and we're in Thailand right now
01:53.01aeryndunhamso it's just about 9:00am
01:53.08resplinAh, that sounds interesting.
01:53.19resplinOnce in a while someone will start an interesting conversation in the channel.
01:53.20aeryndunhamIt is! I'm the internet cafe manager
01:53.23aeryndunhamsp I'm online a lot
01:53.37aeryndunhamI should just add it to my auto-joins so if someone does, I'm here :p
01:53.43resplinThat answers my next question, about what brings you to IRC. <grin>
01:54.08resplinMy coworker's wife worked as a cook on a yacht for a few years. She has some crazy stories.
01:54.10aeryndunhamI'm on IRC a lot, happened across this channel name somewhere
01:54.57resplinAre you LDS?
01:55.01aeryndunhamI'm not actually LDS but incredibly interested?
01:56.04resplinMy Lyft driver last week worked on a cruise ship. He would go to Mormon Church service each Sunday. I was curious how widespread that was.
01:56.47aeryndunhamYou'd have to be on an intinerary where you were in port every Sunday in a place where you could find a service, I guess
01:56.51aeryndunhamout here it'd be tough
01:57.18resplinHe said they would do it on the ship on Sundays. They would reserve a meeting room, post it on the bulletin board, and a half dozen people would show up.
01:57.40aeryndunhamaah
01:57.42resplinHe mentioned how neat it was to meet such a wide variety of people. Must be interesting working on a cruise ship and seeing the world.
01:58.03resplinI've never been on one myself.
01:58.10aeryndunhamThere ARE some kind of crew church services, but since the Christian crew tend to be mostly Filipino, the services revert to Tagalog real quick :p
01:58.23resplinYeah, that would be a hindrance.
01:58.23aeryndunhamIT is! I've been very lucky, been almost everywhere
01:58.41resplinI've been to service in French and Dutch, neither of which I speak. It makes for a long meeting, but nice to be in fellowship.
01:59.01aeryndunhamI haven't been to any kind of church service in a long time
01:59.04aeryndunhamI'd like to
01:59.15resplinWhat do you find interesting about the LDS faith?
01:59.21aeryndunhamI'm vaugely Christian some days... it's a work in progress :p
01:59.23aeryndunhambrb
01:59.28resplinThat's true for most of us.
02:07.29aeryndunhamI guess I just find a lot of the LDS faith so much... nicer? Than the other Christian denomonations. The Plan of Salvation is practically universalism, which I find very appealing. People not being condemned just because they never learned about or accepted Christianity in their lifetime.
02:07.59resplinAgreed.
02:08.17resplinI'd have a hard time being a Christian if I hadn't been introduced to Mormonism.
02:09.39aeryndunhamThe things I'd struggle with would be my fondness for coffee and wine >.>
02:10.02resplinThe adjustment comes quicker than most expect.
02:12.29aeryndunhamI imagine. Just... a morning without coffee sounds so sad :p
02:13.02resplinYeah, when I'm jet lagged I often think my coffee drinking coworkers have an advantage. But I guess that's why they call it faith.
02:13.07resplinI often consider that if it didn't require some sacrifice, it wouldn't be a meaningful commitment. Joseph Smith once said "a religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation". Thank goodness most of us don't actually have to sacrifice "all things".
02:13.19resplinWhat kind of Internet do you have on a cruise ship? Satellite?
02:16.17aeryndunhamYes, satellite
02:16.28aeryndunhamIt's expensive, but being the Internet Manager has its perks
02:16.34resplin<grin>
02:16.41resplinHow many people can use it at one time?
02:17.25aeryndunhamIt's hard to tell exactly how many people are using at any given time, because the crew are charged per megabyte so lots leave their phones on all the time
02:17.33aeryndunhamcurrent active sessions are 261
02:17.43aeryndunhambut most of those who are crew who probably aren't actually using it
02:18.04resplinCrazy to think you can have 200 people using the Internet in the middle of the Ocean.
02:18.29aeryndunhamYeah, it really is pretty cool
02:18.33aeryndunhamMuch slower than land
02:18.52aeryndunhamAnd then I go and do crazy things like squander 300MB on a game download :p
02:19.03aeryndunhamit actually only took about an hour
02:20.53resplinThe perfect environment for IRC
02:23.20aeryndunhamYeah, exactly
02:23.36aeryndunhamDoesn't drain megabytes and keeps working even when the internet is super slow
02:27.09resplinThe LDS Church makes some great mobile apps to give access to the scriptures and other inspiring material. I have a habit of downloading everything before I leave the country so that I have access to everything even when I have no network.
02:27.31aeryndunhamI have the BoM on my Kindle, that's about it at the moment
02:27.43aeryndunhamI read GC talks on lds.org a lot too
02:27.49aeryndunhamor BYU Speeches
02:28.01resplinWow, you know a lot more about Mormonism than most people that happen by this channel. <grin>
02:29.20aeryndunhamhah
02:29.30aeryndunhamI've been interested for a long time
02:29.43aeryndunhamI lived in SLC for a really short time a few years ago
02:30.06resplinWhat part?
02:30.14resplinI live in Utah. Grew up in Sandy.
02:30.20aeryndunhamI took a walk to a temple once in the one port where there was one in walking distance
02:30.25aeryndunhamah, University of Utah for a semester
02:30.29aeryndunhamlived on campus
02:30.38resplinI love that area. Lots of great mountian biking behind Red Butte Gardens.
02:30.46aeryndunhamWent to Temple Square at Christmas, was nice
02:31.04resplinThe LDS Library app is great. I also like to download the Ensign as PDF each month. Lots of great stuff there.
02:31.26resplinBut currently I'm working through the backlog of the Maxwell Institute Podcast. It's fantastic.
02:31.42aeryndunhamah cool
02:31.51aeryndunhampodcasts use up sliiiightly too much bandwidth for me
02:31.55resplinIt's a scholarly look at religion, scriptures, and Mormonism.
02:32.05resplinYou might enjoy a lot of the articles there too. http://mi.byu.edu/
02:32.14resplinYes, definitely something to download when at port. <grin>
02:32.28resplinMy kids say I should go be a dad for a while. I hope you add this channel to your auto-join list.
02:32.38resplinSafe sailing!
02:34.36aeryndunhamThanks!

17:24.42aeryndunhamHi!
17:25.49romanovicwait, you said good evening 5 hours ago.  does that mean it's late at night where you are now?
17:26.32aeryndunhamHa, yeah, it'd 12:30am
17:27.01romanovicI saw your conversation yesterday.  are you in port or at sea?
17:27.21aeryndunhamWe're at sea right now, and then all day tomorrow
17:27.36aeryndunhamthe next day we're at the port closest to Ho Chi Minh city in Vietnam
17:29.24romanovicwhere's your ship's home port?
17:30.18aeryndunhamat the moment, Singapore
17:32.26aeryndunhamwe change to Shanghai in May
17:32.40aeryndunhambut the company I work for has 17 ships sailing all over the world
17:35.26romanovicwow, how do they manage employees from different parts of the world?  do they have to pay taxes in different countries, or are you all technically employed out of whatever country HQ is in?
17:37.07aeryndunhamSometimes your taxes differ if you are from the country your ship is registred to (ours is registred to London).. for the most part, crew don't seem to pay taxes
17:37.19aeryndunhamI'm from Massachuetts so I pay full federal and state taxes
17:37.27aeryndunhambut Americans seem to be basically the onyl ones
17:39.12romanovicinteresting.
17:39.31romanovicbrb phone call...
17:53.29aeryndunhamI'm glad there are people in here!
17:56.22aeryndunhambut it's 1:00am now and I have a busy day tomorrow
17:56.25aeryndunhamBut I'll come back!
